2010 World Theatre Day

2/15/2010

What are you doing for World Theatre Day?

Saturday, March 27, 2010 is World Theatre Day. Created in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI), World Theatre Day is celebrated annually by the international theatre community. Various national and international theatre events are organized to mark this occasion.

Each year ITI invites a world renowned figure to pen an international message that shares his or her reflections on the theme of Theatre and a Culture of Peace. The International Message is translated into more than 20 languages and is read for tens of thousands of audiences around the world.

This year's international message is by Dame Judi Dench.

For the first time ever the ITI's U.S. Center has also chosen a speaker to address the U.S. perspective. We are honored to announce that Lynn Nottage will be the U.S. Center's speaker. The text of her speech will be published shortly.

Several theatre companies and theatre advocacy groups (including The Theatre Communications Group, The Community Dish, Fourth Arts Block, The Internationalists, Lark Play Development Center, The League of Independent Theater and The Innovative Theatre Foundation) have formed the NYC World Theatre Day Coalition. We are planning events, helping distribute copies of the message and providing a central location for companies and artists to coordinate their World Theatre Day plans.
