Spotlight on Andrea Caban
Andrea Caban in You Got Questions?...
Actor, writer, producer, and teacher Andrea Caban received the 2008 New York Innovative Theater Award for Outstanding Solo Performance for her documentary-based play You Got Questions? I Got Answers! which also garnered nominations for Outstanding Short Script & Outstanding Performance Art Production.
Her vast array of New York and regional credits span distances from the Public Theater to the Williamstown Theater Festival to the Boise Contemporary Theater. She has appeared in several national commercials, is the resident clowning teacher at New York Film Academy and is a Medici Fellowship Recipient for her work in Balinese mask theater.
Her solo piece, Questions My Mother Can't Answer, is currently being re-presented as part of the New York International Fringe Festival. In her interviews with eight "women-of-a-certain-age" including a Moroccan ballroom dancer, a prostitute, and her Aunt Shirley, she seeks guidance from a variety of female role models, and discovers that as flawed beings, life isn't about avoiding tragedy, but how one chooses to deal with it.
I asked Andrea what she likes about working in our community: "The Off-Off-Broadway world always seems to say "yes" to my creating scary, exciting theater to do and to share. I'm so excited to be getting ready to jump up on a bare stage again and talk about what's really going on and grateful that the OOB community is prepared to listen!"
Produced by Coyote REP Theatre Company, the show will be presented at New York Theatre Workshop's 4th Street Theatre. For more information visit www.coyoterep.org.
